Good Things

Sometimes life hands you a cartload of lemons but offers no explanations. During those sour times it’s really easy to allow yourself to sink into discouragement and stay there. Sometimes you want to close up shop and head out of town.

It’s not a fun thing for you, nor is it pleasant for those around you. A wise person I know once said “It’s awfully hard to feel sorry for someone when they’re doing such a great job of it themselves.”

Wise words.

So instead, you may choose to look at this time as an opportunity to reflect on the really great things life has to offer. I have a list of them that I keep, and I highly encourage everyone to write down their own. Here are some of mine, in no particular order:

  • Blueberry pancakes

  • Disneyland

  • Snowflakes

  • Freshly made, still warm chocolate chip cookies

  • Tropical sunsets

  • Great dad bloggers

  • Bacon

  • The scent of crayons

  • Tropical islands

  • Play-doh

  • Tropical drinks

  • Doughnuts

  • Being married to the love of your life

  • Tickle wars

  • Legos

  • Chocolate

  • Knowing the God of the universe loves you so much that he visited in person and sacrificed Himself so you could live.

  • Being cuddled by all of your kids at once

  • Finding long-lost Saturday morning cartoons on youtube

  • There are 1,407 microbreweries in the United States

  • Homemade pizza

  • Watching a sunset while sipping a tropical drink and sitting with your wife on a tropical island beach.

  • Warm grass, sunshine and lots of room to play chase

  • Memories

  • This is just a sampling; there are a million more.

It’s nice to know that when the unpleasant thoughts threaten to overwhelm you, you can simply let the nice ones overwhelm you instead. And life picks right back up.

Mmmmm... Froot Loops.... I didn't notice even a hint of skunk smell this weekend, did you? Of course... the neighbor's nasty cigar masks quite a bit. Glad he waited until after dinner to light up. Phew!
